16-Bit Perfection

Released in Japan as the Super Famicom in November 1990, the SNES arrived in the UK in April 1992. Nintendo's follow-up to the NES introduced Mode 7 graphics, the Super FX chip, and a controller design that set the template for decades to come.

The SNES Classic Mini (2017) brought 21 pre-loaded games to a new generation in a tiny, faithful replica of the original hardware — and sold out worldwide within hours of launch.

Frequently Asked Questions — Super Nintendo

Do SNES cartridges work on the SNES Classic Mini?

No. The SNES Classic Mini only plays the 21 pre-installed games and cannot accept cartridges. To play original SNES cartridges you need an original SNES console.

Are SNES games region-locked?

Yes. PAL SNES cartridges have a different cartridge shape to NTSC (US/Japanese) versions and will not physically fit in the wrong console without an adapter. PAL games also run slightly slower than NTSC versions.

Do SNES games save without a battery?

Most SNES RPGs and adventure games save to an internal battery in the cartridge. These batteries last 10–20 years. If a cartridge loses its save, the battery can be replaced — we can advise on this.

What TV connections does the SNES support?

The original SNES outputs via RF (aerial), composite, or SCART (in PAL regions). For the best picture quality, use a SCART cable into a TV with a SCART input, or use an upscaler for HDMI output.
