Pokémon HeartGold

The Franchise That Conquered the World

Pokémon Red and Green launched in Japan on 27 February 1996, designed by Satoshi Tajiri who was inspired by his childhood hobby of insect collecting. The concept — catch creatures, train them, trade and battle with friends — was simple but endlessly deep.

The franchise exploded globally with the anime series and trading card game launching alongside the games. Today Pokémon is the highest-grossing media franchise of all time, surpassing Hello Kitty, Mickey Mouse, and Star Wars.

Frequently Asked Questions — Pokémon

Which Pokémon game should I start with?

For newcomers: Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen (GBA) are the best remakes of the originals. HeartGold/SoulSilver (DS) are widely considered the best overall games. For modern players, Pokémon Legends: Arceus (Switch) offers the most accessible open-world experience.

Can I trade Pokémon between generations?

Trading between generations requires specific tools. Pokémon Bank (3DS) and Pokémon HOME (Switch) allow transfers from older games to newer ones, but not backwards. Some older games require the GBA Link Cable or DS wireless for trading.

Are old Pokémon cartridges still worth buying?

Yes — original Game Boy, GBA, and DS Pokémon cartridges are highly collectible. Be aware that many counterfeit cartridges exist, particularly for Gold, Silver, and the GBA games. We only stock verified authentic cartridges.

Do the save batteries still work on old cartridges?

Game Boy and GBA Pokémon games save to an internal battery. These typically last 10–15 years. If a cartridge won't save, the battery needs replacing — a simple repair. We note battery status in our listings where known.
